Anna-Adriana Anschütz is a biogeochemical modeller with a background in marine biology and plankton research.

Research Interests

Currently, research worldwide is exploring how oceans—particularly coastal seas—can contribute to the uptake and long-term storage of carbon dioxide. A key focus is on ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE), an approach in which targeted interventions aim to increase the CO₂ uptake capacity of seawater.

With a coupled hydrodynamic and biogeochemical model (MOM5.1 and ERGOM), I investigate the potential and risks of this method in the Baltic Sea. A particular emphasis lies on identifying regions that are suitable for the targeted addition of minerals (e.g., calcite) to enhance CO₂ uptake, and on assessing the associated physical, chemical, and ecological effects.

My research focuses on the biogeochemical processes of the Baltic Sea and their role in the global carbon cycle, as well as on the potential ecological impacts of such interventions on marine systems. Due to its characteristics as a relatively enclosed, sensitive, and well-studied marine environment, the Baltic Sea provides suitable conditions for numerical simulations. In combination with established models, long-term datasets, and fixed monitoring stations form a robust basis for analysing the impacts of OAE.
