Research interests

My particular interest lies in the behaviour of trace metals in aquatic ecosystems under changing oxygen availability. Besides earlier studies in oxygenated marginal seas (e.g. North Sea), my work currently focusses especially on anoxic/sulphidic systems such as the deep basins of the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea. By using ICP analytics, I examine redox-sensitive metals (e.g. manganese, molybdenum, rhenium, uranium or tungsten) in the water column, suspended matter, sediments and pore water, in order to apply them as proxies for palaeo environmental reconstructions.
