Research Vessels

Research vessels are key components of marine research infrastructure. They serve as mobile platforms for measuring, observing and recording biological, chemical and physical parameters. The research vessel "Elisabeth Mann Borgese" (EMB), which has been in service for the IOW since 2011, is one of a total of three research vessels in the regional research fleet of German marine research. It is owned by the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. With the aid of the EMB, the IOW carries out marine monitoring in the Baltic Sea. A distinctive feature of the EMB is that, with a draught of just 3.5 metres, it is also capable of operating in the shallower coastal areas of the Baltic Sea.

The research vessel "Maria S. Merian" also bears the IOW logo at its home port in Rostock; planning of its scientific missions is carried out by the German Research Fleet Coordination Centre at the University of Hamburg.
